Taking something apart, putting it back together, and discovering that it still works!
I just saved myself about USD500 worth of BMW workshop time, by dismantling my steeringwheel and cleaning a few bits of circuitry to fix my gearchange. To my intense satisfaction, upon re-assembling everything, it all worked again!!
I must qualify this by stating that i am not known for my DYI skills. Indeed I am well known among my more practical friends as being incapable of measuring the floor of a completely square room for carpeting. the result was room with half as much carpeting as was actually required. Since then, not a lot of faith in my engineering skills from my buddies...
